How fast can you go? Snowkite Speed and Distance Ranking List and Contest
This is a worldwide contest for snowkiters. Just put a GPS in your pocket and ride. At the end of the day check and see what your high speed was, snap a digital photo or download the file and send it to us you never know, a great prize may end up on your doorstep a few days later. Read on for the contest rules and this year's speed ranking list itself. You can check out the last few years worth of speediness by holding your cursor over Speed Ranking to the left and choosing a year. We started back in 2004.
The 2009-2010 list is now complete. Scroll down for contest rules, partners and winners.
Ride safe. Ride fast.
The Rules:

We need either your GPS file (preferred) and/or a digital photo of the GPS - with you in the photo as well and we need to be able to read the max speed.
5. Include your name, location, what was on your feet, max speed, date and kite size/type in an e-mail to[email protected]
6. Any speeds over 60mph must be accompanied by the GPS data from your whole session or results from an online GPS verification program. If you do not have this info, we will still post your speed but marked as unconfirmed.

Stepan Kalichkin sent in this track from a huge 188 mile day in Russia. Check out his upwind path and then big rides downwind.
After a fast day at Umbagog, NH at the end of the season. Two/four of these are season bests (Paul and Chris).
William Bordy went a speedy 48.5mph on his snowboard in Utah before snapping this shot.
iPhone users take note: this contest can be very easy. Jeff Bartkowski sent us data from his iPhone using the app MotionX-GPS. It does everything including sends me a link to your track with verifiable data and you can also attach a photo of your happy face. No more needing an advanced degree to download your GPS data. Thanks for the tip Jeff (and looks like you had a great ride).
Tom Reynolds' respectable run week 7 won him the prize because we liked the photo. Check out that great riding area and his buddies reflected in his goggles.
Want to know about going fast and what it takes? Check out consistent speed winner Chris Krug's blog. His reports on sessions, gear and the people he meets are insightful and entertaining. And he has a talent for photography. Find him at: hardwaterkiter.blogspot.com
That is Alexey Okhotnikov from Saint-Petersburg, Russia. This high speed (around 65mph) was achieved in 2009. But we have made contact with this group of speedy Russion snowkiters and are looking forward to hearing more from them.
Gary Kjelleren rode almost 70 miles and was the speediest of week 14 on this long downwinder on the Inland Sea in Vermont with the kite he won at Kitestorm.
New: How far did you ride? Snowkite Distance List
We are celebrating 2010 with a new element to the snowkite speed contest - distance. This time, we do not care how fast you go, only how far in one day of riding and then keep your season score for the end. All you have to do is zero your GPS before riding, stick it in your pocket and have an amazing day. Then, snap a photo and email it to us with where you were, the kite you were on and what you had on your feet. Even better, send us a screen shot of a Google Earth map with your tracks on it. In order to keep it honest, once we get a feel for the distances that are possible, we will ask for a google map screen shot showing your track for the day. But, for now, just send us your daily distances. We will have some prizes for this category as well.
Get those legs warmed up and have fun out there - whether you go really fast or just ride all day.
